Aspartame and Bad Breath… Is There A Connection?

Sharing is caring!

Aspartame and Bad Breath

Almost every food today comes with artificial sweetener loaded in them. More often than not, it is present to alter the taste of a particular food. However, what most people don’t know is that artificial sweeteners often lead to bad breath. Sounds illogical, yes. But it is true. A number of researches in the field of food and artificial tastes reveal that artificial sweeteners, or as they are scientifically known aspartame contribute to bad breath. To many people, it sounds bizarre since aspartame is mostly used in chewing gums can candies whose sole purpose is to sweeten your breath. But science says differently. And advanced studies and research claim that aspartame holds the potential to not only affect your breath but also a lot of other health aspects.

What is aspartame?

The food sciences define aspartame as an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener which is used as a substitute for sugar in many foods and beverages. The discovery of aspartame was accidental as it came the notice of James Schlatter when he was testing an anti-ulcer drug in 1965. After almost 20 years, in 1981, it received the approval to be used for dry goods and carbonated drinks but not without attracting objections about its effect on the health of people.

The investigations that were carried out following the opposition have deemed aspartame as a harmful substance to be added to foods. Some reports suggest that aspartame amount to almost 75% of adverse reactions to food additives which can lead to seizures or can prove to be fatal. Also, this substance can lead to health conditions such as vomiting, diabetes, allergies, breathing difficulties and other degenerative disorders. It is from these health conditions that the relationship between aspartame and bad breath is derived.

Owing to these conditions, aspartame is considered bad for oral health which is why many doctors and health experts strongly recommend their avoidance. There are mints and gums available that do not have contain any amount of aspartame and are, in fact, healthier.
