New Discovery In Fibromyalgia Pain Focuses on Blood Vessels in Hands

Sharing is caring!

For a long time, Fibromyalgia was believed to be a mental disorder. However, a number of recent studies have found that Fibromyalgia doesn’t in fact start in the brain. This discovery is considered quite remarkable as it puts an end to a lot of mysteries regarding Fibromyalgia. It affects an estimated 5 to 6 million people and pain killers are usually recommended or prescribed as it causes severe pain in various parts of the body. Many doctors considered it to be a mental disorder but the new discoveries state otherwise.

According to the recent discoveries, Fibromyalgia might actually originate from the blood vessels in the hands. This discovery open ways for several new treatments for the condition and a potential cure in the future may also be discovered once the condition is fully understood.

How did the discovery come about?

The mystery of Fibromyalgia was solved when scientists shifted their focus to the hand and in particular, the skin of the hand of a FM patient. The patient revealed absence of sensory nerve fibers in the skin sample that appeared to have a decreased reaction to pain. Scientists involved were quite shocked to discover a large amount of nerve fibers in the came from the arterioles-venule referrals of the skin specimen.

Women, on average, have more nerve fibers than men and this can explain why more women suffer with FM than men.

Before this discover, it was believed that the nerve fibers regulated the flow of blood and helped in reducing the pain but this new discovery led to the conclusion that there was a straight correlation between the nerves and the Fibromyalgia pain. This discovery can potentially answer all questions about why a majority of patients suffering with Fibromyalgia mention pain in the hands and why it seems to increase in colder atmospheres.

As quoted by Dr. Frank L. Rice, a neuroscientist, “Blood vessel nerve fibers are an important target that haven’t been in our line of thinking to date in chronic pain conditions.” He further stated, “The poorly managed blood flow (because of some nerve fibers) can be the source of discomfort and muscle aches and a sense of fatigue, presumably due to an accumulation of lactic acid and low levels of inflammation in patients with fibromyalgia. This, in turn, can contribute to hyperactivity in the brain.”

Some of the common therapies that are used for Fibromyalgia in the present time include narcotic analgesic, antidepressants and anticonvulsants and recommended suggestions such as getting proper sleep and getting regular exercise. This was primarily because the condition was believed to be a psychological problem. Nonetheless, now that the potential root of the FM has been found, scientists are determined to look for possible, long-term cure(s).

One of the scientists who was involved in the study quotes, “When there is something that does not fit into their understanding, some doctors underestimate their patients and tell them that they are crazy. The prescription of SSRIS against fibromyalgia is not the answer – it was nothing more than a lobotomy or hysterectomy.”

This study is quite encouraging and offers relief to Fibromyalgia patients.
