What is Acne?

Terms you need to be familiar with before you read this article:

Sebaceous gland—often known as the oil gland, it is a very small gland in the skin responsible for secreting lubricating oily matter, known as the sebum, into the hair follicles so as to lubricate skin and hair.

  1. acnes—a relatively slow-growing bacteria related to the skin condition of acne.

Acne is a skin condition which affects people from all age groups irrespective of their gender. More often than not, it is addressed to as ‘pimple’ to simplify the condition. But what most people don’t know is that the condition of acne can have varying degrees from mild to severe. However, what’s great is that it is a condition that can be treated and controlled—most times with the help of home remedies.

While it is hard to narrow down the specific reasons for the occurrence of acne, it is believed that it is caused because of excess production of sebum. The excess production leads to the blockage of our pores and the dead cells inside the pore. The P. acne present in the skin then begin to exacerbate the clogged pores. Once the P. acnes are settled in the pore, the clogged pore begins to swell as a result of which a bump is formed. This bump may or may not have puss. The bump without the puss is called a papule. The bump without a puss is called a pustule. These pimples further develop into a whitehead and/or a blackhead. In case the swelling of the pore goes deep into the skin, and the oil breaks into the skin surface, we get whiteheads. If this oil further oxidizes and gathers in the melanin (skin pigment) and hardens the dead cells, we get what is known as the blackhead.

What causes Acne?

As stated earlier, it is quite difficult to correspond a particular reason to the occurrence of the acne. It has been observed that the condition is more common in teenagers primarily because of hormonal changes. The change in the hormonal levels in a person’s body creates an imbalance in the functioning of the oil glands thereby contributing to more acne. The condition may also be supported by hereditary reasons. Some other factors include frequently eating the wrong kinds of food and over stressing.

However, from experience, everyone knows that pimples don’t just appear overnight. The begin as blemishes which may or may not be red in colour and cause irritation. These blemishes grow into acne in a time period of two or three weeks.

Some basics tips for avoiding acne

So far, we have narrowed that acne may be accelerated by blocked pores, consuming wrong kinds of food, stress, and hormonal imbalance. So you can begin by keeping your pores and skin cleaned so as to avoid the build-up of oil. Combine this with eating right and you are on your way to tackle acne. Also consulting a dermatologist would help offer solutions for your acne concerns.

Home Remedies for Mild Acne

The skin condition known as acne is not restricted to pimples. From whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules, there are a lot of ways in which acne manifests itself. For this reason, the acne treatment is a patient process requiring at least 4 to 8 weeks of time before showing any visible improvement.

The acne treatment process begins with getting reliable and effective acne care products. That should be easy since in the current market you have so many options according to your skin type. However, a suggestion here would be to choose a product that has benzoyl peroxide in it because it can potentially kill acne-causing bacteria.

To effectively treat acne, it is important to follow a good facial routine. Therefore, some products that you can invest in include toner, astringent, cleanser, etc. You can use all these products with cotton to wipe dirt off your face before you wash it with your facewash.

It is always beneficial to invest in a medicated cleanser. The severity of medication can depend on the sensitivity of your skin. The biggest mistake is to use the regular bathing soap on your face. The skin on our face is much sensitive as compared to the rest of our body. So, the wise thing to do is to find a cleanser. Since there are all kinds of products available in the market today, you shall have no problem in finding one that suits you the best. Make it a habit to wash your face at least two times a day. While washing your face, rinse at least 8 times with water after cleaning the soap. Give it the freedom to air dry rather than patting it dry with a towel. If you’re pressed for time and need to dry your face – pat it dry with a soft towel; do not rub it as this can irritate the skin.

Medicated astringents or toners are also easily available in the market today. They help in minimizing the oil in and around pores. Another important thing to remember is that if your skin is oily, do not invest in an oil-based moisturizer. The pharmaceutical industry provides a variety of acne-special moisturizer.

Another good habit to follow in your facial routine is exfoliation. But be careful so as to not exfoliate the inflamed acne. Let them heal and then exfoliate. Follow the same caution for face masks as well. Herbal steams or steams with plain water perhaps also aid in opening up the pores. Also, always apply moisturizer when your skin is a little damp for better absorption. If in case, it is not affordable to invest in acne-preventing face wash or toner, you can always use an anti-bacterial soap.
