Health Benefits of Highly Antioxidant Teas

Tea is not yet as popular in the U.S. as coffee, but that is changing fast. Tea has been used for medicinal purposes in India and China for thousands of years now, and it is only now that many in the West have started recognizing the amazing health benefits of tea.

The scientific community is in particular interested in the antioxidant powers of tea. Tea is a powerful antioxidant. It strengthens the immune system, improves cardiovascular health and prevents cell mutations. No, tea does not make you immortal, as the ancient Taoists believed, but it does offer several excellent health benefits because of its high antioxidant powers.

But some teas are more powerful antioxidants than others. Here, we take a quick look at the health benefits of highly antioxidant teas such as green tea, rooibos tea, hibiscus tea, white tea, nettle tea and more. Read on!


1) Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea has its origins in South Africa. It is not strictly a tea as it comes from the legume family, and not from the camellia senensis plant. It is called a tisane for being a tea that does not come from the tea plant. Rooibos tea can be easily identified by its distinct red color, which is why it is often referred to as “red roobois tea”.

Rooibos tea has a different chemical makeup than most teas and has powerful antioxidant properties. It does not have the same amount of EGCG as green and white tea, but has other antioxidants. It is considered to be beneficial for the skin and is taken by pregnant women. The Japanese believe that drinking rooibos tea helps with the development of the womb. Rooibos tea is known for its soothing effect on the body and fights allergies and rashes. It strengthens the immune system as well.

Health benefits include its use as a cure for headaches, asthma, eczema, insomnia, hypertension, low bone density, and a variety of allergies.  It is also believed to have known anti-aging effects on the body. The fact that it has virtually no caffeine content whatsoever makes it very popular with the health conscious. So you can have as many cups of roobois tea as you like without any side effects.


2) White Tea

It’s possible that you have never heard of white tea, let alone had it. It is still to become popular in the U.S., but is very common in China. Indeed, white tea has a rich history. There was a time when only the aristocracy in China could have it, but today white tea can be had by one and all. White tea is found in specialty tea shops and certain grocery shops. You can buy it from select sites on the internet as well. White tea is highly regarded for its ability to fight colon cancer.

White tea is one of the best highly-antioxidant teas available in the market. It has excellent health benefits and has a very delicate flavor. White tea has the highest concentration of ECGG, more so than any other tea and the least caffeine content. It is rich in antioxidants and cancer preventing compounds such as polyphenols. It is the least processed of all teas.

It is good for the heart’s health, is believed to prevent strokes. Consuming white tea is believed to reduce LDL cholesterol or “bad” cholesterol and improve glucose tolerance. It is also known to rejuvenate the skin and prevents bad breath.

But it is a the cancer fighting ability of white tea, especially its ability to fight colon cancer, that gets the most attention. A study on white tea’s protective effects against colon cancer  was published in the February, 2003 issue of Carcinogenesis  by Gayle. A. Orner, PhD, a researcher from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

Dr. Orner found that white tea’s effect on metabolism could block some cancer-causing effects and consuming white tea on a regular basis could be “useful in the prevention of intestinal cancer in genetically predisposed individuals.” She suggests having three cups of white tea daily to benefit from its ability to prevent colon cancer.

White tea has also been shown to help with weight management and weight loss by the prevention of new fat cell creation. It may cause a reduction of fat in the existing fat cells as well. 


3) Green Tea

Green tea is one of the most powerful antioxidant teas you can buy from a store. It has a delicate flavor and has about 25 mg of caffeine per cup. The leaves of green tea are dried and heat-treated as soon as they are picked, which prevents the fermentation process.

This explains why green tea has such rich antioxidant properties. Green tea consists of powerful antioxidants called as catechins (or EGCGs). A study found that taking a cup of green tea a day reduces the risk of cancer by 10 percent. Green tea boosts metabolism and leads to faster weight loss.

If you are going to take green tea, you should probably consider Matcha Tea. Matcha tea is a type of Japanese green tea that has the nutritional content of 10 cups of green tea. In fact, researchers claim that matcha tea has 137 times the amount of antioxidants as the ordinary green tea.


4) Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea is a special highly antioxidant tea that is prepared from the leaves and flowers of the hibiscus plant.  Hibiscus plant or Hibiscus sabdariffa, as it is called, has excellent medicinal benefits. Hibiscus tea lowers high cholesterol and reduces high blood pressure. It has great benefits for the digestive system, makes the immune system stronger and fights inflammation.

Hibiscus plant consists of compounds called anthocyanins, which are among the most powerful antioxidants in nature. Hibiscus tea is given to those suffering from liver disease. It boosts metabolism and helps you lose weight more effectively. It is an excellent source of vitamin C, minerals and several antioxidants. Hibiscus tea is recommended to those with hypertension, stress, anxiety and other related conditions.


5) Nettle Tea
