Choosing the Right Food for Fibromyalgia

It is a widely-known fact that Fibromyalgia is a complex health condition that causes pain in the body which is sometimes hard to explain. This disease is estimated to affect about 4% of the United States population targeting mostly women. Though several research studies have been carried out, the exact cause of Fibromyalgia has been hard to point out. It is precisely because of this reason that finding cures and/or treatments for the condition is hard. However, to be on the precautionary side, it is recommended that patients follow a strict Fibromyalgia diet that can aid in curtailing the pain they experience.

No one-fits-all solution

This is one of the most important things that need to be understood about Fibromyalgia. It is not one of those conditions which is common universally and therefore can be cured by a common treatment. When talking about following Fibromyalgia diet, each patient needs to choose a different diet according to their biology and the extremity of the condition.

When deciding a diet for the disease, there are a lot of options to choose from. However, it must be remembered that not every patient can benefit from all the options. For example, fruits, vegetables and whole grains are overall recommended for FM patients, but depending on the individual patient, whole grains (especially if they contain gluten) and certain vegetables or fruit (e.g. tomatoes) should be avoided. It is recommended for FM patients to make a food journal and note how their body feels after consuming foods especially foods that are considered healthy. If they notice worsening of their symptoms, then those foods should be avoided.

This does sound confusing but that’s only because Fibromyalgia is an individual-specific disease where different individuals suffer from it in different ways and for different reasons. That is why one Fibromyalgia diet cannot work for another patient.

After extensive research and studies, health experts have listed seven foods that that can potentially worsen your condition and therefore must be avoided at all costs. Aspartame, food additives such as monosodium glutamine (MSG) and nitrates are certain food items that should be avoided if you have Fibromyalgia.

In addition to these, simple carbohydrates, sugar and fructose as well as caffeine should also be ignored. This means that these ingredients must not be consumed in any form including those present in tea, cold drinks, chocolate drinks etc. Other foods that should be avoided by Fibromyalgia patients include yeast, gluten, nightshade plants such as chilies, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and dairy products etc.

Though Fibromyalgia can be alleviated or reduced with the help of medications, experts say that it is always better to watch what you consume to eliminate over dependency on medications. It is always wise to discuss your condition with your doctor and a nutritionist/dietitian and then decide for yourself.
