3 Common Eye Diseases To Watch For As You Age

Sharing is caring!

Eye Care Goes Beyond Eyes.

It is a common generalization to associate the care and health of a body part solely with that part itself. However, that is the single most mistake that everyone makes. Most people are unaware of the fact that factors like High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and High Cholesterol can potentially affect your eyesight. These are some of the conditions that can be detected in an eye exam. But apart from these, there are some severe health conditions that affect the eyes of a person. Here are 3 common eye diseases you should look out for as you age.

Glaucoma

This is a disease which affects the optic nerve responsible for carrying information from the eye to the brain. The harmful thing about glaucoma is that its symptoms never show unless some loss of sight is experienced. This is why it is very important to get regular eye exams. Glaucoma is of very different types and has subsequent preventive measures and treatments.

Macular Degeneration

This condition is the most common cause of loss of eye-sight and/or blindness in people aged 65 and above. The condition refers to the deterioration of the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp vision—as a consequence of which the vision of a person is compromised. A retinal exam is recommended for detecting macular degeneration.

Cataract

A Cataract is an eye disease wherein a cloudy film which constrains the light that enters the retina. Cataracts usually occurs in aged people when dead cells shed and build a cloudy spot on the lens of the eye. Getting a surgery is the only way of removing cataract completely.

What other measures can you take?

Most of the eye diseases are never accompanied by symptoms and/or signs. Hence, there are some ways in which you can minimize the risk of eye diseases and improve your sight. As mentioned in the beginning of this article, factors like high blood pressure and diabetes affect the eye sight. Therefore, engaging in some cardiovascular activity, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet with balanced protein and vitamins are activities that help in maintaining blood pressure and sugar levels and thus maintaining eye sight consequently. Also, consider an eye care supplementation regimen.
