Milnacipran — Fibromyalgia Medicine

Fibromyalgia is a health condition that has been hard to figure out. It causes inexplicable pain in the body that can be quite hard for some people to bear. However, science never fails to surprise us. Researchers have found a new drug Milnacipran that has been approved by FDA. Milnacipran HCl or Savella is believed to prove quite effective in easing the body of the Fibromyalgia, or making it bearable at least as well fatique.

Milnacripran is the third drug that has been approved by the FDA for fibromyalgia and is the first drug to be introduced in the United States. This drug is a safe and effective solution for the pain of Fibromyalgia. This is backed up by a number of studies that have been conducted on more than two thousand patients of fibromyalgia.

This medicine when taken in the dosages of one hundred and two hundred milligrams per day showed a considerable improvement in the patient’s physical pain. However, like is the case with most drugs/medicines, Milnacipran has a side-effect that it can cause the patient to feel nauseous. Some other side effects of Milnacipran include dry mouth, hot flushes, profuse sweating, constipation and hypertension. In some cases, palpitations and accelerated heart rate are also witnessed.

Since Milancripran is a new medicine, most of its effects as well as its working procedure is yet to be determined. However, it has been found in many studies that it does help in treating brain abnormalities that are the prime cause of Fibromyalgia.

Many tests of Milancripran conducted on animals revealed that the drug had a high number of norepinephrine reuptake properties which can prove helpful in modulating the pain caused by Fibromyalgia.

Also, according to RXList, this drug mimics that of Anti-depressants. “Antidepressants increased the risk compared to placebo of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term studies of major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders. Anyone considering the use of such drugs in a child, adolescent, or young adult must balance this risk with the clinical need.”

So, the conclusion is that even though it carries with itself an FDA approval, Milancripran should still be used with caution.
