Prostate health is often overlooked by many men for several reasons. The most common reason is that most people aren’t aware of the prostate health conditions. Prostate cancer can potentially affect men of any age but are most common in men over the age of 40 years. Prostate Cancer is hard to detect because it does not come with any symptoms in the early stages.

Like the case with most health diseases, certain factors increase the risk of men falling prey to this disease. For prostate cancer, age, race and genetics are factors that cannot be changed. African American men are at a much higher risk of developing prostate cancer than other groups. Also, if you have a family history of men developing prostate cancer, your chances of getting it are also higher.

However, there are factors which can be controlled. For example, your diet and eating habits play an important role. In fact, in addition to prostate cancer, a considerable change in the diet can also help prevent other cancers.

How to reduce your chances of getting prostate cancer?

An increased consumption of fruits and vegetables has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. There are studies that have found that a group of men eating 28 or more servings of fruits and vegetables weekly had a lower rate of prostate cancer as opposed to men who ate half the number of those servings. The studies, however, did not specify the type of fruits or vegetables and their components; just an overall consumption helped in reducing chances of prostate cancer.

Switching to diets and foods rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids is another great option. Omega 3 fatty acid is found in fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel. Soy products and legumes contain phytoestrogens. These plant-based chemicals do the work of mimicking natural estrogen and, according to a number of theories, help in reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Obesity is a health condition that increases the chances of developing prostate, or any other, cancer. For obese people, sticking to a healthy diet is mandatory for a lot of other reasons. Consumption of green tea has also been shown to also this risk of many cancers, including prostate cancer because of its high concentrations of antioxidants.

Reducing your chances of developing prostate cancer can boil down to eating right, exercising, getting adequate sleep and early detection.
