Skin Fast Facts

Introducing the Skin – The Largest Organ of the Human Body

Most people have no idea that the skin is an organ, much less any knowledge of the fact that it is the largest organ of the human body. The skin acts as a protective barrier that covers the internal organs of the body, the bones, muscles and other critical body parts, from the outside.

The skin prevents germs and other organisms from attacking or infecting the body. It protects the body from extreme temperatures – heat and cold, prevents dehydration and physical injury, for as much as possible. The skin is also a detoxifying agent. It gets rid of the germs and other harmful substances from the body. Just as the liver detoxifies the body from the inside, the skin does so from the outside.

Important Facts about the Skin

Fact #1: Skin is basically an unbroken tissue that covers the whole body.

Fact #2: An adult will have 18 to 20 square feet of skin protecting them, and covering the whole body.

Fact #3: An average adult will have 6 pounds of skin,

Fact #4: Just a square inch of the skin has 6 million cells.

Fact #5: There are over 5,000 sensory points on the skin. The skin has 100 glands and 15 sweat glands. It is 00.7 to 2mm in thickness.

The Human Skin Has 3 Layers…

  • Epidermis is the top layer of the skin.
  • Dermis is the middle layer. The dermis also contains a connective tissue.
  • Hypo Dermis is the third layer. It is a subcutaneous layer that contains blood vessels and the adipose (fat) tissue.

What Gives the Skin Its Color?

It is the epidermis or the outermost layer of the skin that contains melanin, a substance that gives the skin its color. Melanin also protects us against the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Generally, darker men and women tend to have more melanin.

What Causes Acne?

Acne is a condition which is caused when an oil called sebum produced by the oil glands in the dermis – the middle layer of the skin – gets trapped in the pores of the hypo dermis – innermost layer of the skin. This results in the development of acne, which generally occurs in teens and young adults.

The Skin is Always Regenerating

Did you know that the skin cells are always regenerating themselves? The human skin is does not stay as it is – it regenerates constantly. The regeneration of the human skin begins in the dermis. A new skin cell is first created in the dermis, which then travels to the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis. This takes around 14 days.

At the end of the 14-day period, once the new skin cell reaches the epidermis, it continues its journey till it reaches the top of the epidermis. Here, it flattens out and dies after a period of two weeks and is shed by the skin. A new cell takes its place and the process repeats. Every day, the skin sheds billions of cells, which are immediately replaced.

Skin Care Products

Have you wondered how skin care products work? Most skin care products such as exfoliates work on the premise that the old skin is shed by the body all the time while the young skin remains exposed and vulnerable. These products hasten the shedding process and ensure that the skin looks young and fresh. The secret to a healthy looking skin is to shed the old skin cells faster and to replace them with new skin cells.
