Discovering Your Skin Type For an Effective Skin Care Regimen

Sharing is caring!

So, What’s Your Skin Type?

This is a serious question – what’s your skin type? Have you ever tried to find out? You should, as it is very important to know your skin type. Generally, you can group people based on their skin type. There are 5 skin types – normal skin, oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin and combination skin.

We will discuss each of these skin types later, but here’s what you should know. Genetics plays an important role in deciding our skin type. There are other factors to consider as well such as your health, age, diet and daily habits – such as whether you work out regularly or not.

It is a fact that what we eat or what goes into our body can dictate how we look, or rather, affects the health of the skin. Environmental conditions play a huge role as well. Pollution, second hand smoke and the sun – each of these factors has a direct effect on the skin.

So, to keep the skin looking young and fresh, you must make it a point to have a healthy, wholesome diet and avoid junk food or anything that contains trans fat or saturated fat. Also, it is important to keep yourself hydrated – have as much water as possible. This will have a direct bearing on your skin type.

Next, we address the question – what’s your skin type.

As said earlier, there are 5 different skin types. Let’s give an overview of each of them.

What’s Normal Skin?

Normal skin is skin that is healthy, one that is not too dry or too oily. Normal skin feels young, elastic and supple. It is not loose and doesn’t appear saggy. You should aim to have normal skin. Most children have normal skin, but it gets worse as they get older

What’s Dry Skin?

Dry skin is refers to skin that looks rather dull, with patches, flakes and appears crusty. The skin can appear this way if the oil glands in the hypodermis are not producing enough of an oil called as Sebum. In this case, the skin is not property lubricated. For this reason, people with dry skin need to keep themselves hydrated. If you have dry skin, you should certainly try some of the skin moisturizers that are available in the market.

What’s Oily Skin?

In case of oily skin, the oil glands in the subcutaneous layers of the skin produce too much oil. As a result, the skin appears too shiny or greasy. The skin pores look larger than they should and they appear clogged because of all the oil buildup in the pores. The skin appears to have a slippery texture. The oil gets trapped underneath the skin and clogs the pore of the skin. This creates an environment that encourages the growth of the acne causing P.acnes bacteria. That’s why people with oily skin tend to have an acne breakout more often than not. There are a number of skin care products available in the market using which you can clean out the pores and dry out the oil clogs. However, one of the few advantages of oily skin is that those who have oily skin generally do not have wrinkles. So it’s not all bad.

What’s Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin can be oily, dry or normal – what makes it different is that it has a heightened sensitivity to external stimuli. So a sensitive skin can have an eruption of rashes, blotches, swelling, itching, chafing, redness or burning, because of a touch, something that you’ve had for food, a product that you had used or a fabric that you wore. In other words, people with sensitive skin are prone to allergic reactions. The only way to protect yourself if you have a sensitive skin is to use natural products only, avoid artificial scents, and wear clothes that have no chemical or dyes in them.

What’s Combination Skin?

Combination skin type is an amalgamation of all the four skin types that we have discussed so far. People with combination skin have oily skin in some parts, dry in other parts, normal or sensitive here and there. This is actually a common condition. You may have observed some people with oily forehead, nose and chin, and dry cheeks, eyes and mouth. There are a number of skin care products available in the market for people with the combination skin type.
